POLICE have charged three men after they allegedly went on a gun-toting robbery spree at service stations in Melbourne's west.

The men, from Melton, west of Melbourne, have each been charged with armed robbery, false imprisonment, attempted armed robbery and aggravated burglary.

Service stations at St Albans and Essendon were targeted in the robberies yesterday.

The robbers, each wearing a balaclava and armed with a firearm, allegedly smashed a door of a closed St Albans service station about 2.25am, stealing cigarettes and phone cards.

They failed to gain entry to two further closed stations, but then threatened an attendant at another St Albans station about 3.30am, stealing cash and cigarettes.

The trio was arrested just after 4am, after allegedly being seen at a closed station in Essendon.

They were remanded in custody yesterday and are due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
